Building Structures [ARC 2522/2523]

Project 1: Fettuccine Truss Bridge

 

In a group of 5, we were required to design and construct a fettuccini bridge of 750mm clear span and maximum weight of 200g. These requirements are to be met, or else it may result in reduction of grade. The bridge will be then tested to fail. Other than aesthetic value, the design of the bridge must be of high efficiency, i.e. using the least material to sustain the higher load. In order to achieve higher efficiency, we need to analyse and evaluate material strength and also structural analysis of the truss. For the final submission, we were also required to produce an A4 report that consists of precedent study, photographs of construction of the bridge, structural analysis of the bridge and also complete the exercise of truss analysis individually.

 

Through this project, I am able to evaluate, explore and improve attributes of construction materials. I am also able to explore and apply understanding of load distribution in a truss. Besides that, I am able to evaluate and identify tension and compression members in a truss structure and also different arrangement of members in a truss structure.

Project 2: Extension of a R.C. bungalow

 

This project is divided into two parts, first part should be done in a group while the second part is an individual work.  In a group of 6, we were required to obtain floor plan of a maximum 3 storeys bungalow, preferably 2 storeys. We were also required to carry out structural framing and prepare structural drawings for the bungalow. Structural plans should include foundation plan, ground floor plan, first floor plan and roof plan.  

For individual parts, we were required to work in a sub group of 2 members to propose an extension work to the bungalow. Each of us is required to identify and quantify the load acting on the structure and analysis minimum 6 beams and minimum 3 columns.

 

Through this project, I am able to produce a complete documentation on structural system of a case study. Also, I am able to explore and understand the concept of structural analysis • Identification of structural components. I can execute and implement basic procedures of building structure design and also produce a structural proposal.
