Project: Precedent Study

This is a group and individual project. It focuses on investigating historical works to enrich architectural design and ideas. Firstly, we were divided into group of 4 to study a existing historical building. My group mates are Jeffrey Cheah Hoong Fei, Sharon Wong, and Joshua Ting. Our selected building is Basilica di san Lorenzo. In the final submission, we have to produce an essay and a model for group task; a presentation board for individual task and a group final presentation on the submission day.

 

Essay

In the essay, we were required to introduce the given building, which is Basilica di san Lorenzo. We have to answer all the general questions to complete the essay such as the architect of the building, the function of the building, the materials that used for construction and so on. From this exercise, I have gained knowledge about this building.

Analysis Presentation Board
It is an individual task. Each of us was required to produce an A2 board to include all the drawings such as floor plans, building sections, analysis diagram and sketches. Most importantly, our drawings should communicate the depth of our analysis of the building. The analysis diagrams that I chose to do are Public & Private, Geometry and Repetitive to Unique. Through this exercise, I am able to understand about the detail of the historical building.

Model

It is a fun group work which we were required to create a model to communicate our analysis. Our model can be the entire of structure, or of a portion of project that is of high significance. The only material we could use is Balsa timber. My group mates and I decided to build the wall and the dome of Basilica di san Lorenzo. I am satisfied with our final model. Also, we have built a better rapport through this project.

Verbal Presentation
It is a group final Presentation. Our task is to communicate our precedent study through analysis drawings, diagrams, model and essay. I am not satisfied with our presentation as we did not prepare well for it.

Overall, through this precedent study, I am able to recognize and recall appropriate verbal architectural vocabulary when referring to building types, styles and periods. In addition, I have managed to exemplify the sequence of historical periods and how they are represented architecturally. Also, I have learnt how to classify the sequence of historical periods and how they are represented architecturally. Besides that, I am able to produce building analysis which document intentions, concepts, patterns, disciplines, architectural language and contectual relationships.
