Building Construction 2 [ARC 2513]

Project 1: Skeletal Construction “A Shelter For One”

 

Group Task

This is my first group and individual project. Our task is to construct a shelter to fit for one person in a sitting position. Our shelter should demonstrate the knowledge of skeletal frames and its joints. For the final submission, we have to produce a 1:1 shelter and an A3 report with visuals, sketches and manual drawings inclusive of the detailing and documentation of our project. Firstly, we were required to form a group of 5. My group members are Cheah Hoong Fei, Joshua Ting Sing Rong, Adhnan, and Imran. Our shelter design is based on Rumah Melayu. We decided to use steel pipe and wood pallet in the construction of the shelter. Also, we used welding and bolts and nuts as the joints. 

 

Individual Task

After that, from group of 5, we divided ourselves to do the report. The topic that i chose is joints. There are several joints in our shelter which are welding, nail, bolted and screwed joints. Here is our final report.

 

From this project, I am able to appy construction system in design such as skeletal system. Besides that, I am also able to recognize the implication of construction system in design. I can analyse the issues of strength, stiffness and stability of structures including modes of structural systems, forces, stress and strain and laws of static. Although we have faced problems while doing the work together, we discussed, and solved it successfully.

Project 2: Understanding Forces in Solid Structure and Surface Structure

 

This is the final project (group + individual) for this subject. Our final submission is to produce a model showing the different structural systems used in our selected building. We do not need to show the whole part of the building but need to highlight on one area that best describe at least TWO (2) different types of structural system from the roof down to the floor. Also, we are required to produce an A4 booklet to document and illustrate visualizing construction details of the building. 

 

Our selected building is Allianz Arena, which is a stadium. The reason we chose this building is because it consists of skeletal surface and also solid surface. The materials that we used to make the 3D model is PVC board, cardboard and wire mesh. 

 

Although I had faced many obstacles in this project, I have gained much knowledge about building construction. At the end of this project, I am able to identify the basuc structure systems in construction such as skeletal structure, surface structure and solid structure. Also, I am able to diffrenciate these three construction systems in terms of loads and forces acting on structural elements. Besides that, I can recognize and apply the implications of construction system in design. I am also able to analyse the issues of strength, stiffness and stability of structures including modes of structual systems, foces , stress and strain and laws of static. 

 

 

Overall, I enjoy learning this module very much. Once again, thank you all lecturers! =D SPECIAL THANKS TO MR BRUCE FOR HELPING US IN THESE PROJECTS !
