Project 1: Materiality of SPACE
Encountering Space & Materiality

This is a group and individual project. We were divided into group of 5. My group mates are Jefrrey Cheah Hoong Fei, Sharon Wong, Joshua Ting, and Lee Yuan Juan. For the final submission, we have to produce 2 A2 boards and 1 mood board for group task; and 1 A2 board for individual task. The building that we choose for this project is The DNA House, Sarawak. The building is designed to an environmental friendly architectural firm from a 1970’s existing house with the concept of “adaptive reuse”. For me, it is a really special firm as most of the building materials are reused materials. For example, old clay bricks wall, old concrete roof tiles, cement floor, exposed concrete and so on. From this project, I am able to produce complete documentation and analysis of materials in respect to physical and chemical properties. Also, I have managed to identify various types of building material (Finishes and Structural). In addition, I understand the effects of building materials on aesthetics and structural qualities of a space or building. Furthermore, I understand the appropriateness of material used in context several factors occupancy, concept, climate through this project. Besides that, I am able to acquire analytical skill in understanding selection of building materials for a building/design. Lastly, I understand the application/ installation of material as finish and structural material (simple construction).
